The 20 Best Things To Do In And Around Victoria BC This Summer: Part 4 of 4
Get up and about in beautiful Victoria, BC.
As we approach summer (hopefully) I want to share some helpful tips on what to do around Victoria, BC, so that you can fall in love with it just like I have.
Victoria is one of the nicest cities in Canada, and although I’m a little biased, it’s definitely my favourite. I am sharing the 20 best things to do in and around Victoria, and if you want to read the previous part, please click here.
Top 5 Things To Do In Victoria That’s Fun For The Whole Family
1. Butterfly Gardens
Enjoy a vibrant jungle experience in a lovely setting with surprises at every turn in this beautiful garden. As you move with your family around Butterfly Garden, you will, at intervals, encounter frogs, giant iguanas, tortoises, tropical ducks, flamingos, free-flying tropical birds, and more. As you stroll through, you will marvel at the lush gardens that showcase the natural beauty of tropical flowers, fruits, and carnivorous plants. The jungle adventure in Butterfly gardens is an unbelievable experience. If you’re making your way out to Butchart Gardens I highly recommend a stop at Butterfly Gardens along the way. However, if you don’t have time for a full visit of both, at least stop by to check out the free leaf cutter ant exhibit at the front lobby. This windy maze of marching leaf cutter ants is probably my favourite part of Butterfly Gardens and it’s displayed in the lobby by the gift shop, so it’s totally free to check out even if you don’t have time for the full experience.
2. Fort Rodd Hill
Fort Rodd Hill is one of Canada’s historic sites that tourists love to visit in Victoria, BC. Get your family out for a weekend and tour through the old naval military fort, featuring old cannons, bunkers, and 19th-century buildings and the old lighthouse. As you walk around the serene environment and gaze at the historical items, the stories of the soldiers and their families will enthral you with Victoria’s local history. For an easy local get away you can camp overnight at the family friendly oTenTik cabins and enjoy the stars while you roast marshmallows over a campfire. Or for a short day trip, don’t forget to take a stroll along the nearby ocean peninsula at Esquimalt Lagoon.
3. Visit Miniature World
Miniature world is a unique, imaginative and longtime tourist attraction in Downtown Victoria. Located in the prestigious Empress Hotel. Miniature world is popularly called People’s World of Smallness. You and the entire family can explore a gallery display of miniaturised scenes from history, storybooks, fantasy, and fiction. The unique setting of this intricate space will create fun memories for years to come. Displays include King Arthur and the Round Table, Old Westerns, famous battles, Space Sci-Fi, Fairy tales, and more.
4. Swimming
Victoria offers a lot of attractive swimming locations. These include lakes, rivers, and ocean diving for the more adventurous. Some of the best swimming sites in Victoria include Thetis Lake Regional Park, Durance Lake, and Sooke Potholes. Local Lakes are popular destinations for local residents during the warm Summer. Alternatively, Sooke Potholes has gorgeous emerald green swimming pools among the boulders and streams of Sooke River. Thetis Lake is suitable for families as it features gorgeous sandy beaches. Thetis also contain picnic areas where you can enjoy snacks, sandwiches or a small barbeque together. Most of these locations also have great woodland trails for hiking. Both Thetis Lake as well as Beaver/Elk Lake are surrounded by easily accessible hiking.
5. Wildplay
Wildplay is a fun experience for those who are more adventurous and not afraid of heights. Although relatively safe, unlike other outdoor activities, you will have to go through a training session to ensure you are familiar with the harnessing system. Once you’re set up, you’ll be free to climb high in the trees. The Victoria course has you climbing up cargo nets, sliding down zip lines, walking across tightropes, leaping onto swinging logs, balancing on wobbly bridges and swinging from tree to tree like Tarzan. The new system is designed for safety so you’re never able to become unharnessed at any time, but the adrenaline persists just as well!
Final Words
Victoria BC has so many options to choose from depending on your preferred pace and style. Indeed, every part of the city is full of remarkable attractions and lasting memories in the making. If you’re local to Victoria, or planning to visit this Summer, these are a few of the gems you should consider exploring if you haven’t already. Enjoy your upcoming Summer vacation or Staycation, and feel free to reach out if you’re looking for additional recommendations.
