Fernwood is one of Victoria’s most vibrant and unique neighbourhoods. It’s a great place to live, work, and play. Here are five reasons why I think Fernwood is awesome:

1. The People

Fernwood is full of friendly and down to earth people. There’s a real sense of community here, and everyone looks out for one another. It’s a great mix of young and old with vibrant community events, an active community centre and a wonderful local theatre known as the Belfry.

2. The Vibe

Fernwood has a great vibe – it’s relaxed and laid-back, but there’s always something going on. There’s a real sense of creative energy in the air with plenty of local artists in the community. Logan’s Pub is a popular local venue for live music, and there are some great local cafe’s and restaurants including Fernwood Coffee Company, Little June, Fernwood Pizza Company, and Mesa Familiar to name a few. Fernwood is also a short walk to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and Craigdarrock Castle.

3. The Nature

Fernwood is surrounded by nature – Despite being at the heart of downtown Victoria, Fernwood shares the same benefits of the rest of Victoria which is dotted with countless parks/gardens, and only a short drive to reach many regional and Provincial parks in the surrounding area. From the towering trees in Beacon Hill Park to the flowers and gardens everywhere you look, it’s impossible to not feel connected to the natural world here. Fernwood in particular is close to the Royal Athletic Park for Baseball, it’s also centrally located between Swan Lake, and Cedar Hill Golf Course just to the north, Willows beach a short drive east, and Beacon Hill Park as well as the beaches along Dallas road just south.

4. The Architecture

The architecture in Fernwood is varied and interesting, with a mix of old and new buildings. It’s always enjoyable to take a stroll and admire the different styles of architecture on display. From the old brick building of the Victoria High School, to the Tudor style buildings found at the heart of the Fernwood neighbourhood, to the many character homes down each street there is nothing but endless variety here.

5. The Location

Fernwood is centrally located, making it easy to get around Victoria. It’s also close to some of the best beaches in the city, as well as being just a short bus ride or drive to downtown. It’s walking distance to a couple of great schools and the Crystal Pool recreation centre. Fernwood sits along a number of frequent bus routes and some well defined bike lanes making it easy to get to where you need to go. It’s also just a short walk downtown or to the beach if you don’t feel like driving.

If you’re looking for a vibrant, fun neighbourhood that has all the charm and character of old Victoria, then you’ll find it in Fernwood. Whether you’re thinking about making this your home or just passing through on a visit, we know you’ll have a great time exploring this wonderful community.
